Dr. Herbert Swarsen M.D. – Hillsboro Illinois

Senior member on the medical staff at Hillsboro Area Hospital is Dr. Herbert Swarsen, who has operated a family practice at the same location in Hillsboro for 37 years. His first medical office was in the downstairs of his home, which was razed in 1960 when the present brick facility was constructed on the same lot at 524 South Main Street.

Son of Jacob and Louise Swarsen, he was born in Germany in May, 1908. He attended university and medical school in Berlin, Munich and Weirztduburg, graduating in 1932 at Freiberg. He did his internship at City Hospital Berlin-Neukolln and completed five years of residency in surgery and urology at Jewish Hospital Berlin.

Dr. Herbert and his wife Marianne emigrated to the United States in 1938, going first to Chicago where he did a year's internship at Michael Reese Hospital. The couple moved to Hillsboro in February, 1940.

Dr. Swarsen is a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians, membership in which requires annual completion of post- graduate study of various medical topics. He is also a member of the American Medical Association.

He is pictured with staff members at his medical office, left to right: Mrs. Rolland (Betty) Simmons, L.P.N., who's been with Dr. Swarsen for 15 years; Mrs. John (Beth) Adams, secretary for four years; and Mrs. William (Lena) Beck, office receptionist the past two months.

Dr. and Mrs. Swarsen are parents of three children. Tom of Northfield, suburban Chicago, teaches at New Trier East High School. Dr. Ron Swarsen has recently joined two other family physicians in a medical clinic at Aurora, CO., suburban Denver. Julie Ann is currently in a junior executive training program for a dry goods company in Denver, CO.
