Biography & Information

 Services for Gordon E. Benson, 83, of Hillsboro, will be Saturday, April 21, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro.

Mr. Benson died at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the funeral home. The Rev. Ralph Ward will officiate, and burial will be at Wares Grove Cemetery, Butler.

Born Nov. 5, 1923 in Irving to the late Ellis C. and Minnie B. (Pickerill) Benson, he graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1941, served in Europe in the U.S. Army during World War II, and married Winifred Swank on Sept. 1, 1951, in Decatur. She preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 2001.

He worked as a machinist for CIPS until his retirement.

Surviving are two sons, Mark Benson of Springfield and Jeff (wife Nancy) Benson of Greenville; two daughters, Rosemary (husband Kent) Tuetken of Hillsboro, and Margo Benson of Franklin, TN; and one son-in-law, Denny Hiller of Hillsboro. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, LuAnn Hiller; two sisters, Alma McCammon and Kate Barbetti; and a brother, Carson Benson.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hillsboro, Kershaw-Harmer VFW Post #1306, and a former member of the Hillsboro Lions Club.

Memorials are suggested to the Tremont Ridge activity fund.
