Dr. L. George Allen

Dr. L. George Allen, 92, of Litchfield, died Fri., Sept. 25, 2009 at 3:45 p.m. in St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. He was born on Oct. 11, 1916, in Litchfield, the son of Dr. Lee Gilbert & Effie Rosella (Potts) Allen. He was a graduate of Litchfield High School in 1934, the University of Illinois & St. Louis University School of Medicine. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Social Fraternity, Phi-Rho-Sigma Medical Fraternity & Alpha-Omega-Alpha Honorary Medical Society. He entered the U.S. Army as a doctor in 1943 where he was a Captain in the Medical Corps. during WWII while stationed primarily in Iran & India. Dr. Allen served area patients for 63 years before retiring in 2004. During his medical career, he worked at County Hospital in St. Louis, served in the Army for three years, was in practice with his father, Dr. Lee Allen for several years before his father retired, then continued with his own practice. He has been on staff at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield his entire career & was the first doctor on the original Board of Directors there. In the early 1970’s, he limited his practice to strictly geriatric patients. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Litchfield Country Club, Bremer Sanctuary of Hillsboro & the Audubon Society. Dr. Allen was a valued citizen of Litchfield & was much respected & admired for his service & dedication to his patients & this community. He enjoyed photography, developing pictures & gardening. He married Patricia “Patty” Julia Scott, of Chicago, on Feb. 4, 1938 in St. Charles, MO. They enjoyed 71 wonderful years together raising their family, early morning golf outings, yearly vacations to Hawaii & traveling to many foreign countries. She survives. He is also survived by:

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Matthew Scott Allen in 1967;
2 sisters, Dorothy McDonald Sinclair & Betty Hittmeier.
Funeral Information
Funeral services will be held Tues., Sept. 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Fr. Ted Schelich, Chaplain of St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, will officiate. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation will be held Monday from 3:00 until 8:00 in the funeral home.
