  • Terri Jensen I will be visiting Montgomery County next week, Friday, May 10. I have been trying to contact the Ware's Grove Church (I understand that the church is still active) but the number I have is no longer in service. Can anyone tell me: 1: Does the church have records of marriages, christenings, burials available for research? If so, how would I contact the church? 2: Is there a cemetery sexton who keeps the cemetery records (separate from the church records)? If so, how might I contact that person? 3. We plan to visit the Doyle Library in Raymond, the library in Litchfield, and the Historical Society. I have ancestors (Herpst and Berger/Milberg) in the Ware's Grove Cemetery, and have found two baptisms at the St. Paul's Church outside Nokomis (which we also plan to visit). Any other thoughts about good resources to explore during our whirlwind visit? Many thanks, Terri Jensen

I am writing a Regimental history of the 126th. Ill records also show it was Edwin II in the CW. Edwin II married Sarah who had 6 children, the youngest being my gr grandfather. Did not know him but did meet 'grandma Grubbbs" when I was a little kid who lived next door to her oldest, Nita Camp, in Decatur Il.

  • Robert E Hayes Several years ago (before Google) I went to the Hillsboro Library and found an article on micro film from the Montgomery News dated March 6, 1928. It was a glowing obituary for my great-grandfather, a civil war veteran and former slave who migrated from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Hillsboro in 1878. I would like to see a photo of him and any other information that may be lying in some duty corner.

  • Terri Jensen Sandra, thank you for writing. Yes, this is my Herpst family; please mail me directly at tkjensen@bresnan.net and we can exchange info. I am in touch with the person you mention who has done extensive research on this side of the family--we will be traveling together to Montgomery County this spring to see what else we can find. We are particularly interested in looking at church records (and the Raymond newspapers, per Marjorie's response). Terri

  • Terri Jensen I will be visiting Montgomery County from out of state later to do some genealogy research and am particularly interested in church records. My ancestors are the Herpst/Herbst family who were in Butler Grove and Raymond Townships from the late 1860s through the late 1890s. I am aware of their connections with three area churches: 1) Ware's Grove; 2) St. Paul's outside Nokomis, and 3) the now-defunct German Lutheran church in Harvel (would this be St. James Evangelical?) I am interested in the church records: christenings, marriages, and burials. Can anyone tell me: 1. Is St. Paul's in Nokomis Township still an active church? If not, are the records from this church still in existence and if so, who might have them? 2. Who might have the records for the now-defunct German Lutheran church in Harvel? Many thanks. Terri Jensen

    • Marjorie BaileyI find Charles Herpst, age 60 in Raymond Twp. with wife Caroline, age 34 and 7 children in 1880 census. Also Charles Herpst, age 20 in Wm. Watson household, working as farm laborer in Butler Grove Twp. and Ida Herpste, age 19 in Henry C. Welge household working as servent in Butler Grove Twp. Sophia Herpst mar. 16 Sep 1873 George Brant, Montgomery Co. Marriage record. St. Paul's church is still active. We have Raymond Independent newspapers at Doyle Public Library in Raymond. Hope this helps, Marjorie.

    • Terri JensenHi Marjorie, thank for you for this info. I did find the Herpsts in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, and the info from the Illinois Statewide Marriage and Death indexes, and also burial info from this wonderful site. The Herpsts you mention are definitely the folks I'm looking for. I'm trying to pin down info on some of the kids who slipped through the cracks between 1870 and 1880, and between 1880 and 1900, and I'm hoping that church records may help fill in some of the gaps. Some time ago a Montgomery County researcher had some of the church records at hand from St. Paul's and the Havel church and found a couple of christenings for Herpst kids; that's how I know of the Herpsts connection to those three churches. Very interesting because the German christening names were very different from the common name that the children were called by, but provided confirmation of birthdates and other info that wasn't available elsewhere. Good to know that St. Paul's is still active; I will contact the church directly, and Ware's Grove Church, too. I'm still hoping for info on who may have the Harvel church records. I will be visiting the first week of May and will definitely stop at the Public Library in Raymond to take a look at the Raymond Independent newspapers. Again, many thanks for your time and response!!

    • Marjorie BaileyTerri, do you already have Montgomery County death record for Caroline Herpst and Josephine Herpst?
      Marjorie
      11:31 AM February 16
    • Sandra PotthoffTerri-I am new to genealogy research and I may be able to fill in some gaps you have if it is the same Herpst family.

I am the great granddaughter of Emma Muriel Herpst, born March 8, 1873 in Hillsboro, Montgomery Co, IL; died June 19, 1964 in Miami, FL, buried in Oak Hill Cemetery St Louis MO. Her mother's maiden name on her death certificate is listed at Caroline Milberg (father Charles Henry Herbst/later spelled as Herpst). Married George Hose abt 1890.

My father's cousin's girlfriend has compiled extensive geneaology on the Herpst family, so I will share with you what I know about these ancestors, and you can determine if it is your family tree. I've provided summary below, but would be happy to email you pdf file with more detail. My father's cousin's girlfriend also posted a link on rootsweb I can send you if this is the right set of ancestors you are looking for.
If possible, could I ask a favor? We know that Emma Muriel Herpst married George Hose, likely sometime in 1890, but we have no idea how they met or where they got married (she was about 17 at the time, he was 31). If you come across any marriage records for Emma Muriel Herbst and George Hose in your Church searches, please let me know. They likely married either in IL or MO.

Here is the basic info I have, would be happy to email you pdf file of more extensive info I have for some of them if this is the correct family line you are searching (cemetery plot info, location of obits, etc).
Children of Charles and Caroline (also have info on children from his previous marriage):

1.Henry C Herpst (Conrad Heinrich Carl Herbst), born Jan 21, 1864 in Marine, Madison, IL; Married Christine A, died Feb 1914; buried Feb 10, 1914 at Oak Hill in Kirkwood Mo,
2.Minnie Herbst, born abt 1866 in Marine, IL. Married George Brandt 12/23/1889 -ceremony in Edwardsville, Madison County
      3. Caroline (Lillie?) Herbst, born abt 1869 in Hillsboro, IL. married Harry (Henry?) A Myers , a cooper, Oct 17, 1889 in Litc

The Forgotten Cemeteries

Forgotten Cemeteries of Montgomery County Illinois

The Forgotten Cemeteries title is in tribute to all the cemetery readings done by Walter Sanders and his high school students in the 1940's. Hopefully we can carry on the tradition and work together to locate and read all the abandoned cemeteries in Montgomery County!
