  • Ann Tindall Terri Jensen I just saw you post for your visit yesterday! My sister is the church financial secretary. She might be able to help you find out about church records. The cemetery board sexton has records of burials. Several years ago I had access to one of the old record books and documented about 130 names with burials but no longer gravestones. Check this website for grave photos, but I also have a photo file of the pictures. I find no stones with any of your 3 names. I did find a plot owned by Charles Herpst in the north 1/2 row 11, plots 18-19 with burial of Mrs. Herpst but no dates. Email me at tinviking@mac.com if you want more information.

  • susan bailey Ann Stoddard Hi Ann, I have many old family photos that I would like to post, including a 1921 Hillsboro senior class album which may be of interest to folks who have family members from the Hillsboro area. The album is individual photos (3X5) of class members attached to paper with photo corners. The names of most of the class members are written on the paper, I think by my Great Aunt Mabel Bailey. Is there a preferred way to add these photos so that they can be searched by others?

  • Terri Jensen Marjorie Bailey Hi Marjorie, yes, I do. One of the Anns on this site (Tindall or Stoddard?) gave me info about Caroline Herpst's gravesite in Ware's Grove Cemetery (two lots, purchased by Charles Herpst, no headstone), which confirmed that Caroline was likely Charles' wife and my 2gg. Ann could not find info on little Josephine Herpst (b. abt 1876, d. 1879), so probably no stone. Right now, it's a mystery to us who this little Josephine even is...Caroline and Charles had another daughter named Josephine born while this Josephine was still alive, so don't think this is their daughter (although the German naming conventions are confusing, and perhaps her "real" name was something else). In any case, the death record says little Josephine was buried at Ware's Grove. There are other Herpst children who are also mysteries, which is why we were hoping to find church records of batpisms, deaths, etc. and not just cemetery records.

  • Karen Saathoff Ann Stoddard Got a question for you Ann, when you walked Roberts Cem do you believe that you walked it all or there might be more there. I know when I was out there it was so hard to find everything with the shape it is in. I am asking this because of my 3rd great Uncle Louis Madison Bandy, his obit shows his funeral being at the Baptist Church in Honey Bend but there is no record of him being buried in either Cedar Ridge or Roberts, I would think that he would be in Roberts since a few of his wives are buried there.

    • Ann StoddardHi Karen, My mom and I did the best we could to find all the markers at Roberts, but it is so overgrown that I'm sure we did not find all the markers. I'm hoping Jim May had a bit more success. The Sanders listing is posted, so any markers that were observed in the 1940's are included in the Roberts listing.

  • Louis Athey Irving Illinois Louis Lee Athey was born on October 29, 1929 to Ralph A. Athey and Esther Ruth (Hutchins) Athey at home in the old Irving hotel then owned by his grandfather Nathan Lee Hutchins. The old hotel, now gone, consisted of 5 large rooms and a bath plus a smokehouse on the first floor plus 3 large rooms, 2 small rooms and a bath on the second floor. The front porch was two storied with the second floor holding a porch swing enjoyed by many. The first floor porch covered the Irving sidewalk where occasionally young people gathered to hear Ruth Athey and her band practice in the room at the right front of the old hotel. It is reported that dancing occurred there on occasion from the 1920's to the 1940's. Originally, there were pumps to move water into the bathrooms, but by 1929, cold and hot water was carried by hand to the large old tub, then existing only on the first floor. It is too bad that the old hotel cannot be used as a landmark in the celebration of the Irving sesquicentennial this year! LA

C. is in Section/Block 53 Plot 16. I would like to obtain a copy of J. C. and Alvin's birth certificates--certified is not necessary, Joseph's marriage license from 14 Feb 1858--in Litchfield, and Joseph's son's birth certificate (my great grandfather), Clifton Worthington Long b. 1864 in Litchfield.
