 | The Hillsboro Illinois Old Settlers Log Cabin
In 1882 under the leadership of Jacob Cress Thomas Phillips and Solomon Harkey plans were adopted and carried out to erect a memorial log cabin on the Old Fair grounds each of the old settlers to prepare a log to go into the cabin on the smooth outside of which was to be painted the name of the contributor the date of his birth or entrance into the country or state.

 | Prize Winning Safety Ship 1926 Hillsboro Old Settlers
If your memory goes back fifty years to September 2, 1926 when this home designed, home constructed and home decorated float entered in the parade by employees of the Eagle Pitcher plant who were “broadcasting” and practicing safety as shown on the “life preservers” on the side of the “yacht” which revealed the greatest number of days each department had operated without an accident.

Since the first fair was held on what is now Beckemeyer school campus what was to become Old Settlers Day has been a part of Hillsboro. The present Old Settlers Association was formed in 1883, with Solomon Harkey as president, and from then on the annual celebration has been held during the last of August or early September. Music and speaking were the main attractions until parades and floats became a part of the annual celebration
