It is great to see that genealogy records are online now! I have a family history in Nokomis and spent a summer there when I was a kid but I live in Oregon, so it's hard for me to find information. I was in Indiana last summer for a family reunion so I drove to Nokomis to spent a few hours looking showing my family some of my family history and remembering the great visits when I was young.

Biography:

My Great Grandfather John T Lakin came to America in 1912 from England and moved to Nokomis to help sink a coal mine. In 1913 my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Lakin arrived in Nokomis with their children Fred, Jack, Blanche, and Herbert. Blanche Lakin married Charles John "Bebe" Holloway and had two sons, John, born 6-30-30, and Jim. John Holloway was my father. The family lived on School St.
Charles worked in one of the mines and eventually became the Nokomis police commissioner. He also taught first aid classes. In about 1947 or 1948 they moved to Joliet, where Charles got a job working at Statesville Prison. A third son, Charles, was born in Joliet. The family kept the house in Nokomis for years because they always wanted to move back. In 1968 they did. My grandfather died three days after we moved them back to Nokomis. My grandmother lived in Nokomis for several years after that, and I spent a summer there with her in the late '60s.
My aunt Nellie Murphy lived in Nokomis for years as well, on Vine Street.
My uncle, Herb Lakin owned the Dairy Queen for a while, in the '50s or '60's - I don't know for sure when.
I was in Nokomis this past summer - in late July 2011 for a few hours. We ate lunch in a cafe and drove all over town, finding the old family homes and family graves.
