Lindsey Neas Jeffrey, How does May look for working on the headstone project in the old section of Oak Grove?

Jeffrey B. DunnOne of the other board members will probably have to meet you. I'm working 2 jobs until the end of June. I will see if I can get one of the other board members to follow up with you. I'll be at the mausoleum open house Sunday afternoon, Memorial day weekend.

Lindsey Neas Jeff, If the weather stays warm, what are the chances of being able to work on the headstone project for the Rutledge plot, as we discussed last summer, at Oak Grove?

 | andrew howett Interesting read. Here is a website which shows more about William Andrew Howett. http://www.ruffideas.com/howett/wahowett.html. He may have been wealthy at one time but probably died poor. He left his job with the IC and died in a St. Louis mental asylum in 1907 just 46 years old. I would like to know how Ida Rutledge Howett died. She was only about 40-45 years old. The headstoneless Elizabeth Howett who was buried in the family plot in 1988 is definetely Wlibur Howett's third wife.
Andrew Howett about 2 years ago | | Jeffrey B. DunnThat's sad to hear how William died. Several members of the family died at a very early age. As our youngest mayor he was very involved with many projects around town. I live in the old Opera House which he was involved in constructing. My Uncle partnered with him to construct our first power plant. They also provided water, ice, gas and heat to Hillsboro. He was involved with the phone company. He built a really cool looking house. His list of accomplishments go on and on. Next time I go to the courthouse I'll pull Ida's death certificate and see what info it contains. - Jeff

Lindsey Neas Jeff, Since the plot at Oak Grove will accomodate approximately16 burials, and Thomas Jefferson Rutledge was a fairly well-to-do man -- he was a successful attorney and lawyer for the IC -- the family wasn't at that point pressed for funds. I would expect this plot to hold eight graves: T. J. Rutledge (d. 1885), his first wife, Sylvia Bennett Rutledge (d. 1876), and six small children and infants: Lucy Camilla (d. 1854), Emma Sylvia (d. 1854), James Francis (d. 1861), Carrie Lovina (d. 1865), Cornelia (d. 1865) and Eva Ellen (d. 1865). Of course, we know for a fact that Lucy and Emma (listed as "Unknown Rutledge" on the website) are buried in plot 43-1. Their remaining five children -- Ida (Rutledge) Howett, Charles Waite Rutledge, Harry Edward Rutledge, Amy (Rutledge) Stillwagon, and George Nathan Rutledge -- all lived to adulthood. I will attempt to contact Andrew Howett. Ida Howett's husband, William Howett, was the executor of T.J. Rutledge's estate, which remained in probate for ten years. Maybe he knows what happened to T.J. 's death certificate. I'd like to come up to the cemetery. Thanks, Jeff. Lindsey Neas

Jeffrey B. DunnT. J. probably doesn't have a death certificate. They first issued county death certificates here in 1877 but until 1916 they weren't mandatory. So between 1877 and 1916 some people have death certificates but many people don't. Do you know anything about Fannie Lou Rutledge? This is another plot that looks like it's missing several stones. It's owned by J.H. Beatty and I think Fannie may have been his wife. The headstone is very hard to read. http://history.montgomeryco.com/Def...;tabid=981

 | Jeffrey B. Dunn Lindsay - How many burials do you think might be in this lot? Ida (Rutledge) Howett's husband was very wealthy. He partnered with my uncle J.J. Frey and they started the power company here. I would think that up until 1905 Ida would have taken good care of this lot. The stones may be a bit deeper than the 2-3 inches that I probed. Most empty graves in this section look perfectly flat. When you view the lot it appears that most of the graves in the front row have probably been used. I'll check it out again this weekend. We do plan on repairing all the broken stones in this section that we can locate. - Jeff about 2 years ago | | Jeffrey B. DunnAndrew Howett is a member on this site. He's related to Ida (Rutledge) and William A. Howett. Here's his profile: http://history.montgomeryco.com/use...rew-howett You might contact him. I can't locate the e-mail he sent me but he has a nice web site with information and photos from the Howett family.

 | Jeffrey B. Dunn Lindsey - I got the letter you sent to the Oak Grove Cemetery Association. I have all their records online. There isn't any other information available for lot 43-1. There are a lot of headstones missing in the oldest part of the cemetery. To try to figure out who's missing I've gone through and photographed each of these plots and tried to match up the family members. In plot 43-1 there is room for up to 16 burials. The other family members you are searching for are more than likely in this plot. The headstones have probably fallen over and are now covered with a couple inches of soil and grass. - Jeff about 3 years ago | | |
