My Family

Paula Fair

I am looking for my great-grandfather's burial site. Leslie Lee Sanders (1887-1933) was buried in Kansas City, MO, according to his death certificate. I called that cemetery and they have no records of his burial. I found a letter from his sister stating she wanted him buried in the "family plot" at Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield, Illinois. I have requested a search on Findagrave, but so far no luck. Any advice?

    • Ann StoddardHi, I have a listing for Elmwood and I didn't find him on it. Perhaps if you provide several other family names I might be able to confirm this family has a plot at Elmwood.

    • Ann StoddardAre you related to Walter Sanders (1910-1984), the Litchfield high school history teacher? If it was not for him and his students readings I would not have known my ancestors were buried in Allen Cemetery in Zanesville and most likely I would have never gotten involved in genealogical and historical research in Montgomery Co. Sanders compiled a listing of Elmwood, but only included burials before 1900 - so it does not help us with locating the bural locaiton of Leslie. You should reach out to the Montgomery Co Genealogical Society - they have the Sanders genealogies and it might include burial locations. Good luck!

    • Paula FairYes, Walter Sanders was my second cousin 2X removed. John Chandler Sanders, Jr. (1831-1869) of Campbellsville, Taylor, Kentucky, was the father of John Chandler Sanders III (1864-1927), who was the brother of my great great grandfather, William Lewis Sanders (1866-1912). John Chandler Sanders III was the father of Ray Erwin Sanders, who was the father of Walter Sanders. I have a portion of the Sanders and Shipp genealogies that Walter Sanders compiled. They have been extremely helpful in my research. He left an amazing legacy! I hope to travel to Litchfield in the near future. Leslie Lee Sanders was born in 1887, Taylor County, Kentucky, but moved with his widower father, William Lewis Sanders to Litchfield, IL. Leslie was left in an orphanage in St. Louis, as his family was extremely poor and couldn't care for him. At some point he returned to Litchfield and started preaching. He was known as "The Boy Preacher." His story ends badly though. After he married my great grandmother Irene Joyce Parker (1888-1976), of Wagoner, Oklahoma, he traveled to every state in the union, preaching and raising funds for his ministry. In 1920 he was convicted of using the US mail to defraud, since he mailed letters asking for donations and then could not account for all the money. They divorced in 1925 when he was sent to Leavenworth Prison. Because he was rather "famous" for his preaching, he received a sentence commutation from President Herbert Hoover. The commutation stated that he must not return to using the mail to seek donations or he would be returned to prison. Well, he was back at Leavenworth in three months. While in prison he started a very successful prison ministry. He died in 1933 and according to his death certificate and a letter from the warden, Leslie was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. I then found a letter from his sister stating she wanted him moved to Elmwood in Litchfield. The superintend
