Tamara MiddlesworthI am referencing an ID number 14824 referenced under a name of Lila Fugate. Anyone with info please pass along. Thanks!!!!
Julie CloseHi Tamara. I am a Gates from neighboring Macoupin and Sangamon Counties. I have learned to never discount the possibility of these people with the same surnames being related to each other. ESPECIALLY the Gates'! They traveled and moved together during the westward migration over the course of three generations. And they intermarried with the same families so many times, it drove me nuts until I figured them out!
I have attended a Gates family reunion a couple times, in Butler, Montgomery County, IL, that went on for almost 80 years. It has now, I understand, stopped. I felt kinda funny because none of them were any more closely related to me than a common ancestor named Yost (Jost) Goetz who died in NC sometime in late 1798. . . according to this: Abstracts of Wills & Estate records of Rowan Co., N.C. E:223. Youst Catz. 14 Oct 1798 no prb. date. Farmer. Wife Mary to have a peaceable possession of the dwelling house which then goes to son George. Son: John. 2 youngest sons, Michel and Philip, to have 70 pounds each; they are under age. Exrs: sons George and John. Wit: Jacob Fisher, John Eller. (Signs in German) There is a handwritten note at the bottom of the page that says: 1753-1805 & tax lists 1795-1778.
Well at that reunion, I said I was uncomfortable and lots of them said "oh don't worry about that, we all come to it wth our families and we don't know how we relate to each other either"!
As it turns out, there are just tons of his descendants that did make there way to Central Illinois. I know many of them! Isn't that cool?! And there's a huge amount of Gates genealogists. I come from his son Michael Gates. The german name Goetz changed in Michael's lifetime to Gates.
So how much research have you done? Are you the one who put all those fabulous pictures of your great grandmother on Ancestry.com I just saw????? If not you better go look at them. Its free.
Also, you can trace Lula Gates Handshy and her
