Jim May

I just added several awesome photos which Polley Lawrence allowed me to scan from her collection of photos and postcards to add to the website. Thank you, Polley, for sharing these great photos. There are many I've never seen before. Everyone should be sure to check them out. There will be more posted in upcoming days including ones of the Chautauqua and Butler.

  • Marjorie Bailey Old Tombstones Found-While putting in tile on the site of the old Lutheran cemetery, east of St. Agnes Catholic church, last week, the workmen dug up two old tomb stones that were buried in the ground some five feet deep. The bodies that had occupied the graves where the stones were found had evidently been removed and the tombstones had been thrown into the graves and covered up. They were found on the Mrs. Master's property on Vawter street. The inscription on one of the stones was "John T., son of H. C. Misenheimer, died dJuly 24, 1858 aged 9 years, 7 months and 12 days." On the other stone was the following inscription: "Augustus Knight, died March 2, 1945, aged 37 years, 3 months and 17 days." I will give you the entire article later.

    • Jim MayThanks so much for this find!!! I'm amazed that you found this!! I did call Pavel at the paper and he wants to do an article on the fact that this stone has surfaced twice in the last 99 years and still has not found a permanent home. Maybe with your find and a newspaper article, we can do just that!!

    • Ann StoddardPlease be sure to post the article to the site if the paper ends up doing a story. So very interesting that the stone has been found twice!

  • Jim May Below is a picture of a grave marker I found in a ditch washout northeast of the courthouse in Hillsboro. Anyone have any idea where it might belong?

    • Jim MayIn the post below is the photo. It is a grave marker for John T. Misenheimer. Died July 24, 1858 at the age of 9. Any help is appreciated. Ann Stoddard found him on the 1850 census.

    • Ann StoddardHi Jim, other than the census info I have not found any addition information other than his family had moved out of state by 1860. Not sure where he is buried for sure, but Jeff said most the burials from the Lutheran Graveyard were moved to Cress Hill.

    • Jim MayOkay…Mother Nature has dealt another snow card to us, so I think it would be best that we cancel Sunday’s scheduled meeting. There is nothing on the agenda that warrants putting people at a fall risk for. I will follow up if/when we reschedule.

Thanks and sorry for any confusion.

  • Jim May Anybody ever heard of the "Country Spot Tavern"? I just came up with a token from there and feel that it is local but cannot attribute it to any town.
