 | Marjorie Bailey Henry Clotfelter, Coffeen, IL, 26 yrs old next b'day married Nov. 2, 1889 Rosa E. Sherman, Irving, IL, 22 yrs old next b'day. Her father John Sherman, her mother Ann Rhodes. From Montgomery Co. IL marriage recors. about 4 months ago | | Sue SmithRosa's parents names agree with her death record and also, with what I know. How did you access this info? When I check all I get is the date and license number. Montgomery County wants $15.00 for a copy of the license...not quite as bad as a copy of a death certificate...$17.00. A little too steep for my blood. I do think I'm on the right track with these names.
I don't know Jeremiah and Mary Ann. There are Sherman/Shireman researchers out there who, I believe, have some families confused and mixed families together.
Thanks.

 | Marjorie Bailey I have the book Desc. of David Abner Clodfelter (also spelled Clotfelter) at Doyle Public Library, it lists Rosetta's children (about 8 pages of information) . I could photo copy that if you want (charge would be
$2.00). The book is a total of 451 pages and is also at Hillsboro Pub. Lib. about 4 months ago | | Sue SmithThanks for the offer, but I'm going to hold off right now. I sent my $5 and request to Madison County to get a genealogical copy of Rosa's death certificate. I hoping that it will tell me who supplied the info. It might give me a lead. If it supplies any new info, I'll pass it along.

 | Marjorie Bailey Rosetta E.( Sherman) Clotfelter, born Aug. 29, 1867 in Ramsey, Fayette Co., IL, dau. of Jeremiah G. 'Jerry' Sherman & Mary Ann Rhodes, died Dec. 24, 1934, age 67, in Alton, IL, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro, IL. It is not known what his widow's life was like after the death of her husband, but at some time in her future, 'Rosa' suffered a nervous breakdown and was admitted into the state hospital in Alton, IL where she died Christmas Eve 1934, from a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Clotfelter was a member of the
Methodist church. Children: Daniel N., Marie B., Clyde, Minerva, Mary R., Oliver W. , Alice M.
Reference:descendants of David Abner Clodfelter by Sarah W. Ernst.
. about 4 months ago | | Sue SmithWell...I'm basing my conclusions on the death record I found at FamilySearch. I've seen the names, Jeremiah and Mary Ann, but figured they were another Sherman line. It is confusing. I need to call my mother and see what she remembers. At 82 she is the only Sherman descendant living who remembers any of these family members. If I can't sort some of this out, I can get a genealogical copy of Rosa's death certificate from Madison County for $5.00. Perhaps the person who supplied the info on the certificate will give me a clue. Thanks for answering back. Is there anyway I can access the reference you cited?

 | Marjorie Bailey I do not have a listing for Poland Cemetery. Try Fayette Co. Genealogical & Historical Society, P. O. Box 177, Vandalia, IL 62471-0177. What is Anna Sherman's maiden name? I do have many Fayette quarterlies. about 4 months ago | | Sue SmithThanks. Ann's maiden name was Rhodes. She married Jonathon Shireman about 1863 in Harrison County, Indiana. (The Shireman's began using Sherman as a surname in the 1870's-1880's. I don't know why.) On the 1870 census for Montogomery County, you will find Ann and John "Shirenan"and their daughter, Rosa/Rosetta. Ann died in 1879. On the 1880 census, I found John and his son (my great-grandfather), John H., Rosetta is not with them. After 1880, I can't find Rosetta or the elder John. Of course, I do know about my great-grandfather.
Yesterday, I went to FamilySearch.org and typed in Shireman info just to see what I might find. One thing that popped up was a death record for Rosa Clotfelter. My mother remembers Clotfelter's from when she was little. On this death record, Rosa's birth date is Aug. 29, 1867 (which would agree with the 1870 census). Her parents are listed as John Sherman and Ann Rhodes. Rosa died in 1934 in Madison County, IL, but is buried in Hillsboro. On the 1900/1910/1920 censuses Rosa, her husband (Daniel Clotfelter) and children are living in Hillsboro.
I strongly believe that this is the little girl from the 1870 census and would be my great-aunt. What lead me to this conclusion was not only the info on this record, but an obit that my mother gave to me for Daniel Clotfelter Jr. who died in 2003. Where did Rosa go after 1870 until her marriage? I haven't been able to find her in the 1880 census, yet.
Do you have any thoughts?
Linda BolesSue, just found your posts on Rosa Sherman. She was my grandmother. Yes, she married my grandfather, Henry Clotfelter and had my mother, Alice Mayola Clotfelter. My sister and I did the genealogy on the Sherman's a few years back and then realized that something was not right. Started doing somemore research and found that the Sherman was Shireman before. Traced Jonathan Sherman back to Harrison County, Indiana, but couldn't determine his father. Think it is Jacob but I believe there were more than one Jacob. Actually stopped in Harrison County once and was so confused by the Shireman family, it didn't help.
Also found John Shireman and John H. Shireman in filmore in the 1880 census and like you, no Rosa. Rosa married Henry 2 Nov 1889 in Montgomery County.
After the death of her husband, she became erratic and would disappear at night and be found lying on the grave of her husband in the morning. She may have had Alzheimer's but no one else in the family has every had is so it is believed she just never got over his death. She died on Dec 24, 1934. The death certificate shows that she suffered a Fracture of the Right Femur on Nov. 4, 1934 which eventually resulted in her death over a month later. Her family actually though she was pushed down the stairs as she had stated that she had enemies there. She was a resident at the Alton State Hospital in the Wood River Township, IL at the time of the injury. Her body was brought to Hillsboro to the Bass Funeral Home.
I am just now working on this line again and if I can help you or if you can help me, it would be great. My e-mail address is boles77@earthlink.net
